Laser micromachining

Precision beyond conventional machining

Laser micromachining enables extremely small and complex features that can be difficult or impossible to produce with conventional machining methods.

At Veldlaser, we use ultrashort pulse (USP) laser technology for high-precision cutting, drilling, milling, structuring and perforating.

By carefully controlling the interaction between the laser and the material, we can achieve precise material removal with minimal thermal influence on the surrounding area.

Our process is developed around your material, geometry, tolerances and production requirements.

Ultrashort pulse laser technology

Precision with minimal thermal influence

Ultrashort laser pulses interact with the material for an extremely short period of time.

This enables highly localised material removal while limiting the amount of heat transferred to the surrounding material.

The result depends on the complete process: material properties, wavelength, pulse duration, pulse energy, repetition rate, beam characteristics and machining strategy.

That is why Veldlaser develops the laser process specifically for each application.

Cold ablation

For suitable materials and process conditions, ultrashort pulse lasers can remove material with very limited melting and a small heat-affected zone.

This is particularly valuable for applications where dimensional accuracy, edge quality or preservation of surrounding material properties is important.

Minimal thermal influence

Reduced heat input helps minimise unwanted deformation, recast and thermal damage.

High precision

USP processing enables small and complex geometries with accurately controlled material removal.

High-quality surfaces

Optimised laser parameters can achieve clean features and high-quality surfaces while reducing the need for subsequent processing.

Non-contact machining

Because there is no mechanical cutting tool in contact with the component, there are no conventional cutting forces or tool wear at the point of machining.

Materials

Every material interacts differently with laser light.

Veldlaser develops processes for a broad range of engineering and advanced materials, including:

Stainless steel · Titanium · Nitinol · Aluminium · Nickel alloys · Tantalum · Polymers · Ceramics · Glass · Quartz · Sapphire

The optimum laser process depends on the material, thickness, geometry and required result.

From feasibility to production

A successful micromachining process starts with the component — not with the laser.

We analyse:

Material → Geometry → Tolerances → Surface requirements → Production volume

and develop the appropriate laser process around those requirements.

Veldlaser supports projects from initial feasibility and process development through prototyping and repeatable series production.

More than laser equipment

Decades of laser expertise

Veldlaser introduced ultrashort pulse laser micromachining in 2008 and combines this experience with extensive knowledge of materials, process development, measurement and automated production.

Our facilities include more than 20 laser systems, metallurgical and measurement capabilities, controlled production environments and an ISO 7 cleanroom. Veldlaser is ISO 13485 certified.

This allows us to look beyond the laser process itself and develop a manufacturing solution around the complete application.
