Laser Drilling
High-precision holes, from prototype to volume production
Precise laser drilling for small holes, complex patterns and demanding materials
Precise

Precision drilling without mechanical contact
Laser drilling enables precise holes and complex hole patterns without physical contact between a cutting tool and the component.
At Veldlaser, we develop laser drilling processes for applications where conventional drilling methods reach their limits in size, material, geometry, speed or accessibility.
The laser process is selected and optimised around your material, thickness, hole geometry, tolerances and production requirements.

Three laser drilling techniques
The optimum drilling method depends on the required hole diameter, material thickness, geometry, quality and production speed.
Single-pulse drilling
A single laser pulse creates the hole.
This technique can provide very short processing times for suitable materials, thicknesses and hole geometries.
Percussion drilling
Multiple laser pulses are applied at the same position to progressively remove material and create the hole.
Percussion drilling provides additional control for deeper holes and applications where a single pulse is insufficient.
Trepanning
The laser beam follows a circular or defined path to create the required hole geometry.
Trepanning provides greater control over hole diameter and geometry and is particularly suitable where precision and edge quality are important.

Controlled geometry and quality
A laser-drilled hole is more than just a diameter.
Depending on the application, important requirements can include:
Diameter · Position · Roundness · Taper · Entry and exit geometry · Surface quality · Heat-affected zone
Veldlaser develops the complete drilling process around these requirements.
Laser source, wavelength, pulse characteristics, beam parameters and machining strategy are selected according to the material and required result.
Minimal mechanical influence
Because laser drilling is a non-contact process, no mechanical cutting force is applied to the component.
This can be particularly valuable for delicate, thin or difficult-to-machine components where conventional drilling could introduce mechanical stress or tool-related limitations.
By optimising the laser parameters, thermal influence, burr formation and recast can be controlled and minimised according to the requirements of the application.
Complex hole patterns
Precision repeated across every component
Laser technology enables individual holes as well as large numbers of accurately positioned holes and complex patterns.
Once the process has been developed and validated, it can be automated for repeatable production.
This makes laser drilling suitable for applications requiring a combination of precision, complexity and production efficiency.
Materials
Different materials require different laser parameters and drilling strategies.
Veldlaser develops laser drilling processes for a broad range of engineering materials, including:
Stainless steel · Titanium · Aluminium · Nickel alloys · Tantalum · Tungsten · Other metals · Advanced ceramics
The optimum process depends on the material, thickness, hole geometry and required quality.

Proven laser drilling expertise
Veldlaser has been developing laser drilling processes since 1998.
Our experience combines laser technology with process engineering, materials knowledge, measurement and automated production.
This allows us to develop a complete production process rather than simply producing a hole.
From feasibility to production
Every project starts with the application.
We analyse:
Material → Thickness → Hole geometry → Tolerances → Quality requirements → Production volume
Based on these requirements, we select and develop the appropriate laser drilling process.
Veldlaser supports projects from initial feasibility and process development through prototyping and repeatable series production.
From one hole to high-volume production
With in-house laser systems, measurement facilities, metallurgical expertise and automated production capabilities, Veldlaser can support both development projects and ongoing production.
For applications with large numbers of holes or components, the process can be optimised for production speed while maintaining the required quality and reproducibility.
